Funny way of describing a very tall person

Sometimes you need to make fun of the people who are too tall.

In my language, we have a term that is used to make fun of tall people. For example we want to take a picture and a tall person stands in front. We say something like this:

Look at that giraffe! He is blocking all of us.

I know that vertically challenged is a funny and sometimes euphemistic way of referring to someone who is short.

Is there a funny idiom that can be used to refer to someone tall?

*lanky does not fit the bill

    Not a teacher.

I've heard some people ask tall people: "Hey, how's the weather up there?"

    Thanks

But it's not a way of referring to them.

Is that common in American English? I found this quote from a movie:

All right, you scrawny beanpoles: becoming a cop is *not* something that happens overnight. It takes one solid weekend of training to get that badge.

How common is it among natives? What if the person is female? Mommy long legs?
