It's Italian, and it's spelled ciao. It does mean Bye.

Dear teachers,
When I watch an American film, I always heard something pronounce like 'Chiao' (I don't know whether I spell it correctly or not) when people depart from each other. I think it should be 'Bye'. What does this 'Chiao'
mean? Does it 'Bye'?
Thank you.
