Have I made any mistakes?
Before visiting his in-laws Tom bought a couple of expensive presents. He didn't want to give an impression of being stingy or disrespectful, although he believed that whatever he gave them, they would be displeased. Tom knew they had not approved of their daughter's choice of husband. They certainly expected a man from an upper-class family, someone who was like themselves and never had financial worries. Tom was working class and had to struggle throughout his childhood, because growing up without a father and with a mother who often drank marked him for life. What a contrast this was to Diana's childhood, spent in luxury and surrounded with love and care. At the age of ten, when he went to bed hungry on many occasions, his future wife was playing Chopin's Etudes on her own piano and receiving expensive private lessons. Although Tom was highly educated, he knew his in-laws would always look down on him. But he couldn't take exception to it. They had lived in their own world and mixed in circles of people with similar status and values. Tom was an intruder who had entered their world only because he had won Diana's heart.
