    he was as young, and as deprived as he was

    Hello everybody!

    This is RJ, his first day home, at four and a half months. I suspect a lot of the people who saw him in the shelter did not realize he was as young, and as deprived as he was, because he certainly doesn’t look like a kitten.

    Is the general idea behind the sentence in question that the people who saw him in the shelter were of the opinion that he looked much older and not deprived, because he certainly looks very neglected.

    What do you think?

    Yes. The comma after "young" is incorrect.

    Looking at the text, it seems more that they didn't know what a cat of that breed should look like at that age- it's a big breed. Compared to smaller breeds and non-breed cats, he looks OK, so they thought he was older.
