Equal rights works better for men.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/archi...-8db1354edc7d/

There are two things in this article that I don't understand:
    1) Why "Equal rights works" and not "Equal rights work"? (10th paragraph, 4th line)
    2) If one year after the publishment of the book the writer regretted having written a book, and said that, without the ex-husband, the book would have been written 10 years earlier, what prevented her from writing the book ten years earlier?

Re: Equal rights works better for men.

    1) The subject is the concept "equal rights", which is singular.

    2) The ex-husband somehow interfered with writing the book.

I don't understand the period of time - 10 years earlier. Had the couple been together for more than 10 years, although married for only 1?

Re: Equal rights works better for men.

The article is behind a paywall, so I can't read any details.

I have no idea how long they were married, but the statement implies that the have been together (not necessarily married) for at least ten years. Relationships, especially bad ones, can put a big strain on people's pursuit of their personal goals.
