    played her guide role

He had a problem while/when he went on a trip to Tokyo with his sister. That trip was his sister's first overseas trip/the first overseas trip for his sister. so he played the role of a guide for her/played her guide role during the trip. Even though they planned the itinerary together, they were getting tired during the trip because of a little tight schedule for them..

Which would be more natural between these two?

    Re: played her guide role

    1. ... when he went (or "during a trip ...")
    2. ... he played the role of a guide for her.
