    the line is worked

    Hello,

"Immediately prepare to gaff next buoy, which is now close at hand. Thus the line is worked, leapfrog fashion."

William Warner, Beautiful Swimmers: Waterman, Crabs and the Chesapeake Bay

How can I interpret the part in bold? Does it mean shaping the line into a leapfrog shape?
I am a fleeting visitor on this fragile Earth.

No. There is no leapfrog shape. Instead, it's the way it's done.
