Hello,
I am doing a bit of research on the popularity and decline of certain names.

I'd like to ask - what connotations spring up when you see or hear the name Gary?

Curious to see what people think.

Thanks!

It reminds me that I reconnected with a friend named Gary whom I hadn't seen in over thirty years a couple of weeks ago.

It reminds me of my friend Gary from school, some thirty years ago. It has connotations of belonging to a lower social class for me. Middle class boys wouldn't be called Gary.

It can be short for the Welsh name Gareth.

You also really ought to bear in mind that native speakers from England will have very different connotations from those brought up in a North American culture. You also ought to bear in mind the age of the speakers.

I can't hear the name Gary without thinking of that fabulous Far Side cartoonist Gary Larson.

His retirement was a borderline crime against humanity.

What makes you say that?

Probably so they can go back and edit their post to sneak in some spam links in the quote....

I agree. I feel the same way about the unappreciated understated comedian Garry Shandling from long-ago television.
