Re: Use to exemplify instead of for example

I suppose you could say As an example in some cases, depending on what comes next. It is not always interchangeable, however.

Re: Use to exemplify instead of for example

Sometimes, 'say' is a suitable alternative to 'for example'.

Call one of your local plumbers, say Lee King-Spigot or Dwayne Pype.

In writing, you can use 'eg' (or e.g.)

You can even say (informally) 'ee-gee'.

You can use that but I wouldn't make a habit of it.

For one is followed by a sentence. It cannot replace for example/instance.

The is also case in point.

Re: Use to exemplify instead of for example

Speaking of which, is for one thing still in usage? One can find it in many older works of literature every now and then.

"Where did you get this?" he said, "and what is it? For one thing, Mr. Sayce, it is not what I prescribed. Yes, yes, I see the label is right enough, but I tell you this is not the drug."

Novel of the White Powder by Arthur Machen, 1895.

Re: Use to exemplify instead of for example

In my opinion, For one thing should be followed by For another thing. Otherwise, why?

Alan: Barb, why won't you go out with me?
Barb: Well, for one thing, I'm just too busy. For another thing, I don't like you.

Re: Use to exemplify instead of for example

It's commonly used. I don't see a need to mention another thing after it.
    I am not a teacher.
