There was a man who thought of himself as popcorn. He was admitted to a mental hospital and his delusion was almost wiped out by the doctor's intensive care. But in his subconscious mind, the delusion still lingered.

The doctor asked him a question one day.
"Now are you popcorn or not?"
"I'm not popcorn anymore." he replied.
The doctor judged him cured and ordered him to leave the hospital.

But the delusion still lingered in his subconscious mind.
One day after his discharge, he was walking down the street when he ran into a chick and tried to hide in a fright. Because some chicks like popcorn, he was afraid he might be eaten by it.

His psychiatrist, who happened to bump into him on the road, saw him scared and asked, "Dear, you said a few days ago that you're no longer popcorn. Why are you hiding?" He said, "I know I'm not popcorn anymore. But that chick doesn't know that(I'm not popcorn anymore). boohoo!

The first one ("in his subconscious mind") is OK. However, try:

As he was walking down the street he saw a chicken and tried to hide from it.

And:

His psychiatrist happened to see him ....

And:

"But that chicken doesn't know that," he bawled.
