Hello

I intend to write an article about culture shock. In one sentence I want to use the verb "mix" and suggest a foreign student should mix in with other people. Is this correct?

To alleviate the effects of culture shock, a foreign student should try to mix in with the people and other students in the new society. They can join social clubs and make new friends.

mix in is not the best word here, in my judgement.

What alternatives have you considered?

I am almost certain that "blend in" , integrate, and assimilate would work.

But I want to use "mix". Doesn't it work in this context at all?

mix is okay, but mix in isn't.

blend in doesn't work.

Although the senses of the words are appropriate, I don't think you can't use integrate or assimilate either, with the sentence as it is currently phrased.

I believe you should use the plural there. Perhaps:

To alleviate the effects of culture shock, foreign students should get acquainted with as many natives as possible.

What does mixing with natives entail? What if you try to mix (whatever that means) and are rebuffed?

Why is there culture shock?
