Hello.

In the sentence below, I am pessimistic about the possibility of finding a better synonym than "productive", but maybe you will be able to find one?

I am French and I am writing an academic article, mainly on Herbert Spencer's philosophical and political thought. I wish to make a short sentence, ideally as short as possible, for reason of style.
Spencer speaks of social evolution to designate human history. He believes that social evolution shows to people – to scholars, more particularly – what kinds of consequences to expect from alternative economic systems: according to Spencer, past social evolution is a source of knowledge that can help people decide between competing economic systems.
The context:
Social evolution shows what to expect from alternative economic systems.
The sentence:
Social evolution[SUP]1[/SUP] shows that capitalist institutions have been more wealth-increasing than socialist ones.
[SUP]1[/SUP]According to Spencer.
To make the sentence shorter I propose:
Social evolution[SUP]1[/SUP] shows that capitalist institutions have been more productive than socialist ones.
However, "productive" is not an exact synonym. Its advantage is to make the sentence shorter, but it is less informative than "wealth-increasing".

Thank you very for your help.

Is it really worth making a change that saves just seven characters when, as you've already indicated, "productive" isn't a synonym for "wealth-increasing"? I'm really not sure you're going to find a way of cramming all that information into a short sentence.

In cases like these, it's always a good idea to see if the sentence can be restructured/rephrased. What I mean is, "have been more wealth-increasing" is not great English. We need to spot that and fix it.

I suggest, as a possible alternative:

Social evolution shows that capitalist institutions have generated more wealth than socialist ones.

If that doesn't convey the same idea, post below.

Your suggestion, teechar, seems to me to be excellent!
