    Over and against

"Over and against the reduction of party relations to the relations between the leaders and the led, comrade attends to the effects of political belonging on those on the same side of a political struggle. As we fight together for a world free of exploitation, oppression, and bigotry, we have to be able to trust and count on each other. Comrade names this relation." (jodi Dean, Comrade)
What does "over and against" mean here?

    Re: Over and against

I think it just means 'against'.

Jodi Dean certainly has a rather turgid style, fairly typical of Marxist rhetoric, I'd say.
