    back into bed

    Context: Operation Witchcraft

Percy: I think the time has come to approach our American brothers-in-arms.
Minister: Will they take us back into bed?
Percy: I'm not interested in a one-off trade. I want on-going access to American intelligence.

    Re: back into bed

Two people, groups or companies who work closely and intimately together may be thought of as being in bed together, like lovers. In the period before this dialogue, the American spy agency has been very distrustful of its British counterpart. The minister is asking if Witchcraft will bring them back together again.

It also alludes to the proverb 'politics makes strange bedfellows'.

    Re: back into bed

The relationship with American intelligence services, the Cousins, is strained by the mole at the heart of British intelligence.

And if you like the books, A Legacy of Spies, which bookends his masterpiece The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, is a complete treat. A return to form for a great writer who hasn't hit the spot for a while. For me, it was him in full flow adding to the canon. I know this is not a universal opinion, but I do wish I hadn't given it to my sister-in-law to enjoy when books are harder to import.

Maybe somebody will give me that book for my birthday. (I like mysteries.)
