[Grammar] Usage of articles before complements to factitive verbs

We know that no article is used before complements to factitive verbs e.g. - (a) They made him president , (b) Sourav Ganguly was elected captain.

In the following sentences which one is correct? Kindly give me suggestions.

1) He called me a fool.

2) He called me fool.

1 is the only common way to say this that I know.
But "call" isn't a factitive verb here.
