    take down

“I was thinking that one must be very penetrative to discover a woman’s emotions from the view of her back hair.”
Bertha laughed: “I don’t think I have any emotions to discover. I feel ...” she sought for some way of expressing the sensation—“I feel as if I should like to take my hair down.

From Mrs. Craddock (set in the late 19th century) by W Somerset Maugham

What does the underlined part mean?

    Re: take down

To undo her hair arrangement and let her hair hang freely.

Edit: The opposite is to 'put up' your hair - arrange it in some manner, particularly in an intricate or complicated style, especially one that lifts the hair high on the head off the shoulders.

    Re: take down

I think "let your hair down" is a more common figure of speech.
I am not a teacher or a native speaker.
