I work with the men and women of this Office

I cherish every day that I work with the men and women of this Office to pursue justice without fear or favor and intend to ensure that this Office's important cases continue unimpeded."
from a report named Who is Geoffrey Berman, the U.S. attorney fired by Trump?

Why does Berman say 'the men and women of this Office' in the quote?

Isn't it simple to say people of this Office? Does he imply he favors gender equality? If yes, is gender equality a challenge in the US?
Please correct my writing if there's any grammatical solecism.

Don't try to read too much into this. 'Men and women' is natural and normal.

Yes, it would be simpler to say the people of this office, but it's a manner of speaking some people have.

In a way, he is implying that he is a fair person and does not distinguish between the genders of his co-workers, consistent with his role in pursuing justice.

He might be trying to be a bit rhetorical.
