Hello,

Around some pools in hotels, there are some seats with sun shelter which are used for by people for relaxing and lounging by the pool.

Some of them have shelters that can be opened and closed. What are these seats called and how can I talk about the shelter?

Does this work?

We were relaxing by the pool on the reclining seats with their shelter closed.

They're sun loungers and beach umbrellas. The larger structures are some kind of gazebo. I've never seen that round a pool before but I don't think I've ever stayed at a hotel that's as posh as that one looks!

Thanks. Apparently, sun lounger is British.

What do Americans say?

They're called cabanas.

Here's how Longman defines cabana:

a tent or small wooden structure used for changing clothes at a beach or pool

And the pictures are different from one I'm looking for.

I should have pointed out that they're also called sunbeds in BrE.

I think gazebos are permanent structures. I would called those temporary structure tents and the round ones umbrellas/canopies.

That's not correct. It's very easy to buy temporary/pop-up gazebos. Many people in the UK have them stashed away in their loft or garage, ready to create shade (or protection from the rain!) at gatherings and parties in the garden.

What is the exact American equivalent for "sun lounger"?

We use "chaise lounge" which is a corruption of the French "chaise longue," (long chair).

Pronounced like "chase."

This usage makes many BE speakers want to claw their own eyes out.

Why's that then?

Why's that then?

Because "chaise" isn't pronounced like "chase", nor "longue" like "lounge". Also, a sun lounger isn't even shaped like a chaise longue!

Aren't you the people who have a "filet" steak and call it a "fill-it"?

To me, a chaise lounge is a piece of indoor furniture, usually with only one arm and a back that extends only about half the length of the chair. Those outdoor things in the pictures are simply 'lounge chairs' to me.

Exactly! These are chaises longues. I've definitely never seen one of them round a hotel pool.

That's why I didn't say cabanas.
