The Meteorological Office, which is responsible for telling people what the weather will be like the next day, is always receiving suggestions from amateur forecasters, offering it advice. Some of ___ people base their forecasts on the movement of the planets, others on past weather records, and there are a few who use their observation of conditions in the countryside.
(A) this
(B) that
(C) these
(D) those
(Yang Jinfang)

The answer to the above question is option C.
What's wrong with option D?

These is appropriate because the subject focuses on the particular group. These implies here while those implies there.

What is the source of the quoted text? The author's name alone is not sufficient.

The title of the book is Chinese, my English translation of which is "A Must for College Entrance Examination: Cloze Tests with Detailed Answers."

What's wrong with option D?

It's not nearly as good as option C, which is the answer in this case.

Notice the close proximity between these people and the prior mention of who they are (amateur forecasters), which comes at the end of the previous utterance. When we have such close proximity, we're more likely to use this/these rather than that/those.
