    Conditional + is or was

    Consider this sentence:

    If he were your enemy, you wouldn't mind whether he **** a king or a beggar.

    Should I use present tense (is a king or a beggar) or past tense (was a king or a beggar)?

    Use the simple past, was. "Mind" is the wrong verb earlier; use care.
