    travel ... for/to?

    They bought the tickets and traveled on the ship for America.
    (Book 6, Lesson 2, by Kangxuan)

    In the above sentence, can we use "to" instead of "for"?
    I need native speakers' help.

    I think "to" is more likely. Example:

    I am going to Houston to visit my sister.
    Not a professional teacher
