Correct use of "that of"?

Hello,

I know the phrase "that of" is mostly used to make comparisons but is the following also a correct use of the phrase?

You committed your life to that of an educator.

No. That doesn't make sense to me. If someone said it, I would assume they meant either:

You compared your life to that of an educator.
You committed your life to being an educator.
