1. listen to + object + bare infinitive (indicating a whole action)
1) I listened to Tom tell a funny joke.
No. Tom was telling the joke.
I am not a teacher.
I may be out on a limb here, but I honestly think that tell and telling work here, and to get the sense of completeness, I would use the bare infinitive.
