How can I describe when someone drops a bottle made of glass and the bottle breaks and there many different pieces on the ground?

He dropped the bottle to the floor and it broke into a million pieces.

I mean there must be other verbs to specifically describe this. I was thinking how I could use words like "shard", "scatter", "smash".

There's not much you can do to the opening but you can certainly improve "broke" and "pieces".

He dropped the bottle on the floor, where it shattered, scattering hundreds of shards across the tiles.
