    a synonym for build

    Hello.

What words can I use instead of "build" in the context of talking about construction? Can I use "erect"?

What do you think about this sentence I have written?

They were erecting a tall apartment building near my house.

Yes, but I want to make sure that I have used "erect" correctly and naturally in the sentence.

Most of the examples I saw in the dictionaries were in passive voice.

There is no rule to say that a word which can be used in the passive voice cannot be used in the active voice, or for that matter, in another tense.

I'm not sure I understand what that means.

What's tense got to do with it?

But I should say that this is one dictionary and upon another search I found examples in active voice.

    Re: a synonym for build

One of the four examples there had a verb in the passive. That is hardly 'most'.
