I was going to guess that it's the subject of the implied phrase "as yesterday [was]".

mohammedabo, you need to change 'old' to 'cold' in your title and text.

Ohhhhh, I thought it was strange kind of proverb or idiom (perhaps a direct translation)!

Today is as old as yesterday.
Is yesterday here an object?

Today is as cold as __ yesterday.

In simple terms, yes: "yesterday" is object (complement) of the preposition "as".

The analysis of "yesterday" is somewhat problematic. One solution is to treat it as a comparative clause reduced to just a single element, a noun phrase, functioning as complement of the preposition "as".

Note that I have inserted the gap notation '___' to show the reduction.

It’s possible to add material to the position of the gap, cf. "Today is a cold as it was __ yesterday".
