Shouldn't it be getting to places? Or is it a fixed expression? Don't we need to before a noun when get means arrive?

Yes, it is getting to places, meaning arriving at places.
I am not a teacher or a native speaker.

It's correct as written. It would be unnatural with the preposition.
    I am not a teacher.

I think it's possible for one person's incorrect answer to be acceptable to another person.
Good points. I've restored the post.

I didn't know "places" can be used as an adverb.
    I've found it here (#6):

You're right—that's definitely an incorrect answer!

Both versions are natural, but the version with the preposition is the only natural version in my own speech.

Sorry to confuse. I was referring to GS's comment in post #3, here:

Yes it's an adverb, but only in the known idiom "going places", which means travel: https://www.lexico.com/definition/place
