Never was anybody at once so ridiculous and alarming

Never was anybody at once so ridiculous and alarming.

Source: To The Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf

I don't understand this sentence. Why does the sentence have no subject. Also,'was' means 'get to know', doesn't it?

Never was anybody at once so ridiculous and alarming.
Think of the underlined words as meaning 'Nobody was ever'.
'At once' means 'at the same time'.

    Does that help?

See above. Capitalize only the first letter of a name unless it contains an embedded capital as in "LeCarré", "MacDougall", "O'Hare", and so on.
    I am not a teacher.
