- Cester is pronounced /stə/ - Leicester, Worcester, Gloucester.
- W at the start of the final syllable is silent - Norwich, Berwick, Southwark.
- Er is pronounced /ɑ:/ - Berkshire, Clerkenwell, Hertfordshire."
