Which of following phrases in bold letter is correct?

1- The interviewers selected John for the job from among many who applied for it.

2- The interviewers selected John for the job from many who applied for it.

3- The interviewers selected John for the job among many who applied for it.

4- The interviewers selected John for the job out of many who applied for it.

I would accept those three sentences with or without the definite article. I don't think it's necessary.

For me, 1 is wrong. 2 is the best. 3 is okay. 4 is okay.

The definite article definitely makes the sentence better.
