Scott became more or less resigned to his fate

    Is this correct and natural?

Scott became more or less resigned to his fate, cowering in the corner of his cell. They were going to execute him on January 25th. January 24th was the longest and shortest day of his life. In a strange way the hours dragged, yet he could feel the next day encroaching fast, creeping on him. What if the sun doesn't rise tomorrow?

It's good. We'd usually say "approaching," but "encroaching" has an interesting vibe.
I'm not a teacher. I speak American English. I've tutored writing at the University of Southern Maine and have done a good deal of copy editing and writing, occasionally for publication.
