Hi there. Would you please proofread the following text? Any help would be appreciated.

***************************************************************************************************

The people of Jade Valley were never lax when there was work to be done, so it didn't take that long before they had built their new houses. One of the first houses to be finished was Yang’s house, along with a new paddock for Moogh, which backed onto the river as before.

A few months later, the village was mostly completed, including a new meeting hall. The crater, which was to become a small park with flower gardens, had been filled in with plant refuse and ash. It now formed a steamy compost mound that rose to about three metres above ground level in the centre.

The Elders held their first village meeting two months after everyone had returned to the valley and made an announcement that did not surprise anyone and was met with great enthusiasm. Gan was named “Adviser to the Council”, a position of Elder, second only to the leader Xiaohua, and a prelude to becoming the leader when she passed away.

Some of the best things for compost heaps are potato peelings, orange rinds, and banana peels.

The basic reason compost heaps heat up is because of the activity of the microorganisms that break down the organic material in your compost. As they chew up and break down the green and brown material, they use up oxygen and release heat. This heat gets trapped in your compost pile and gradually warms up. So that's why people call a compost mound "steamy".

If you do it right you get some really good fertilizer for your garden. And it's cheap, because you only use food scraps.
