Is this correct and natural?

I trudged in the plain, the only sound in the world the crunching of my own feet. A blustery, chilling wind dragged dark gray clouds from behind the mountains in the distance. It began to snow. Big, thin flakes swirled in the air as if they were flying ash from a volcano. The thought of a volcano warmed my heart as the snow covered the ground, covering its scars.

In this context, across doesn't mean you walked from one end of the plain to the other. It's the most natural way to say you walked upon it.

There was also the sound of the wind.

I'm not sure you mean scars. Why is the ground scarred?

The ground is scarred because in the past, war happened and it has many holes and craters. I have likened them to scars. Does it work?

Can I use wound?

Over would do the same for me.

I don't think the wind drags clouds. It pushes them maybe.
