What does it mean that I can speak a language?

    Are my underlined sentences natural?

Jo: How many languages can you speak?
Lily: What does it mean that I can speak a language?/ How do you define if someone can speak a language? I only can form simple sentences in Japanese. I don't know if it counts.
If I make any mistakes in English, please let me know!

They're not bad. Other ways to say it include:

    - It depends on how you define it.

    - It depends on what you mean.

    - Do you mean fluently?
I'm not a teacher. I speak American English. I've tutored writing at the University of Southern Maine and have done a good deal of copy editing and writing, occasionally for publication.
