What is a verb that can be used which could mean some animals live in an area?

To reach the hospital, the doctor had to go through a park...by big cats.

I think inhabited is the best choice.

We have verbs for restricted areas animals are forced to live in like penned, but nothing much for this case.

I actually like "inhabit". It works fine for me.
