What is a verb I can use to describe the motor of air conditioners on the window of a house?

Can I use "stick out"?

I reached the alley. There were air conditioner motors sticking out of every window.

Sticking out is fine but I think motor is the wrong word. The window air conditioning unit in your photo probably contains small electric motors driving the fan and the pump but they are not the heart of the device. Our Soothing Dave is an engineer. He can probably provide a better answer and correct my errors.

The entire air conditioner is sticking out of the window. Only the grille and controls are inside.

Well, the window has been modified by changing the bottom part of the frame into an opening for installing the air conditioner.

Actually it hasn't. The double-hung window is closed as far as it can be, fitting into a channel on top of the air conditioner. The openings on either side are blocked by accordion-folded barriers.

This type of air conditioner is ubiquitous in the United States. I've had a couple of them myself.

Okay, the windows come with the opening for the air conditioner. But then, the size of the opening varies with the sizes of the air-conditioner, so it is not easy to standardize such an opening. We have to modify windows on site to accomodate the air-conditioner, which usually don't look as neat.

I like it.

Does this work?

The back of air conditioners jutted out of every window, whirring with a loud noise in the summer night.

It's simple. The lower sash slides up nearly half the height of the window. It can accommodate any air conditioner that's shorter than the opening. You close the window until it meets the air conditioner, then put in the side barriers. This opening isn't designed to fit an air conditioner; air conditioners are designed to fit windows of a certain size or larger.

These window air conditioners just slide into an opening. You don't have to modify the opening, and it doesn't have to be of a standard size. If has to be bigger than the air conditioner; that's all.

Right. That's not a motor. It's the entire A/C unit.

Ted, the type of air conditioner in the picture is designed for double-hung sash windows. This is the most common type of window, by far, in American houses. They may not be used in your area.

Try starting with the windows, not the air conditioners.

Is this okay?

Air conditioners protruded from all the windows of the neighborhood, whirring with a loud noise in the summer night. Hot streams of air radiated off their backs.
