[Grammar] Formal vs Informal Verbs

Hi, I have done an assignment on formal and informal verbs. Can someone look over it and tell me if I used the right verbs? I am not sure about a few sentences. I have written my verbs in brackets.)

postpone request repair verify establish select provide demonstrate
discover increase enquire purchase ensure receive/obtain inform assist


  1. Many people asked (request) about the new position at the company.
  2. The governor asked for (discovered) information about the protests.
  3. They were uncertain about the results so they asked an expert to check (verify) them.
  4. We did not get (receive) the documents on time.
  5. Sales went up (increased) slightly in the first quarter.
  6. He asked me to help (assist) them with the marketing campaign.
  7. We regret to tell (inform) you that your application has been rejected.
  8. The company was set up (established) in 2013.
  9. After the first test it was necessary to fix (repair) the prototype.
  10. The machinery was bought (enquired) at the beginning of last year.
  11. I’m afraid we have to put off (postpone) the meeting until next week.
  12. The technicians want to make sure (ensure) that this problem does not happen again.
  13. Employees must show (demosntrate) competence in certain skills before they can work independently.
