when a piece of land meets a river

I want to express the idea a piece of land meets a river.

    Is this correct and natural?

I kept walking until the grassy land fell away gently to a narrow river.

If that doesn't work, how can I say it?

    See above.
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.

They both sound fine to me.
I'm not a teacher. I speak American English. I've tutored writing at the University of Southern Maine and have done a good deal of copy editing and writing, occasionally for publication.

If it's very narrow, could it be a stream?
