    Hyphens #2

    Which of the following 5 should have a hyphen, please?
    1.) arch shaped 2.) well swept 3.) cared for 4.) light coloured 5.) little used

    Again, we only hyphenate these phrases when they are attributive adjectives. This stops people from stunbling as they encounter the first word after an article.

    John saw the arch shaped structure.

    It would be easy to read that John saw the arch. That leaves "shaped structure" hanging. So we use a hyphen.

    John saw the arch-shaped structure.

    Do you understand?
