    air-con

    1. What does air-con stand for? air-conditioner or air-conditioning? or both?

    2. Are there any differences in meaning between these two sentences?
    a. Were there any air-cons 40 years ago?
    b. Were there air-cons 40 yeaars ago?

    I. I think it could be used to describe both coditioning and conditioner(s)
The meaning would become clear in the context it was used.

For 2 I would use was instead of were
Was there any air-con forty years ago?
Was there air-con 40 years ago?
note: (no 's' on the end of con)
