An -ing form of a verb is a gerund when that form is used as a noun.

An -ing form of a verb is a present participle when that form is used as part of a verb or when it is used as a modifier.

    Swimming is fun. (noun/gerund)

John saw a whale swimming in the ocean. (modifier/participle)

John was swimming in the pool. (part of verb/participle)
