I'd say you could use either, Avalon, but 'school of fish' is more common, IMO.
How about a cattle/kettle of fish? I know thereīs the expression thatīs another kettle of fish..but how about the spelling?
'kettle' is the word you want. 'cattle' means a group of cows/calves/bulls or a group of just one of those things.
And last but not least, does one say..I went to the market and bought 3 fish?
