    Talking 246-now that

    Hello all

Can anybody explain the meaning, use and location of (now that) to me?
In what kind of sentence can I use it? With examples please.

    Thanks a million

"Now" refers to the present and "that" simply introduces a clause indicating what happened just before now that is worthy of mention.

Now that Mary has arrived, we can start the meeting. (We couldn't start it before mary came).

Now that Poland is free, it must work on building its own economy. (Poland didn't have to do that before.)

Now that I've finished my report, I can leave.
Now that John is married, he doesn't need his little black book.

Now that it has been explained to you, you will be able to use the phrase correctly.

Now that's a good question. This usage is an example of a case that Mike and Tdol haven't covered - but it's the one I thought of when I saw the string's title. This sort of now doesn't say anything about time or the sequence of events. It's just a conversational device used to buy the speaker some thinking time. Or it can be used to indicate approval - to say 'this conversation has some value for me - carry on: Now that's something I hadn't thought of..

Now that can also be used in a narrative, to indicate a bit of background information, or an observation by the story-teller:

Now that was the last thing I should have said; they got really upset.

Now that was a lot of money - almost a year's wages

The words 'now that' have very many different functions in different contexts.
