    gerund or infitive

    I would like to know the difference between go on to do and go on doing, try to do and try doing, mean to do and mean doing.

    go on to do = do something later in life
    go on doing = continue the current activity

    try to do: an attempt that was minimal in effort and probably not successful
    try doing: a real try, a real experiment, possibly successful

    mean to do: intend to do, have a commitment to do something
    mean doing: not used except for explaining the meaning of an action
