    What a strange a set of words:

    "Not for him any plea for work to be found for these unfortunates."

    "Joseph Medill, the ultra-conservative owner of the Chicago Tribune wrote an editorial in 1884 on the problem of the city's large mobile population of homeless, jobless men. Not for him ...etc.

    He is unaffected by such pleas. Somebody else (more compassionate?) would be more likely to be moved by such pleas.
