    Hello all

Would you answer this question please?

Mr. X and Mrs. X lived with each other from 1987 till 1991. What did they do in 1991?
    1. They committed diverce?
    2. They got diverce?
    3. They take diverce?
    4. They divorced.

    Or any other answers.

    Regards

    Matilda

    Re: 252-divorce

You could say 'They divorced.' or 'They separated and divorced.' or 'They got divorced'.

    Also:

    They got a divorce.
    They obtained a divorce.
    They were divorced.

There are so many options because "divorce" is an ergative verb. Basically, that means that the verb can be used in the active voice or the passive voice with no change in meaning.

    Simpler examples:

    Ice melts (in the sun).
The ice was melted (by the sun).
