Question Is it OK to use 'so' as a conjunction without 'personal pronoun'

    Hi

Both the sentences below sound OK to me, but my co-workers believe that only sentence 1. is correct? Is sentence 2. more a slang, spoken version or is it wrong?

    1. They had failed at their attempt to rescue the princess, so they spent the night in the jungle.

    2. They had failed at their attempt to rescue the princess, so spent the night in the jungle.

    Any ideas??
