    how many people + verb ?

    Which sentence is correct:

    How many people live in the village?
    How many people do live in the village?

    They are both correct. The auxiliary 'do' is only used for emphasis though. In speech, it would be strongly stressed.

    Yes, it's possible as Coffa said in last posting. Here we could rephrase the base sentence like the following:

    How many people indeed(=do) live in the village?
