    Is there such an expression as "He was sputtered with rage."

    I think this is what you want:
    "spluttered with rage" - Google Search

    One can only splutter with rage if one is trying to say something. Otherwise, one just fumes - unless one is incandescent with rage.

    (Note:someone whose face goes white with anger - 'livid [with rage]' - may hit you; if his face just goes red, he may well splutter something.)

    It should be "He sputtered with rage". Imagine a person so angry that he was yelling a spitting at the same time.
