Is "are there any pieces of cheese on the table" correct?
There is an orange on the table. Are there any oranges on the table? What is the short answer if there is only one orange on the table?
    Thanks

Yes, you can say "Are there any slices of cheese on the table?" But why don't you ask "Is there any cheese on the table?"
